What are maternity wards like in Cambodia? Not quite what we are used to
Access to education is complicated even in the Southeast Asian country of Cambodia, which is subsequently reflected in the level of specialized healthcare. One of the areas Czech doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals are helping to improve is obstetrics. Their priority is to reduce mortality among mothers and newborns.

Pařízek: We are not missionaries in Cambodia. We want to educate
Czech specialists have been helping in Cambodia for five years. As part of the Czech Perinatology Hands to Cambodia they not only train local healthcare professionals but also educate the general public. The initiative aims to reduce mortality among pregnant women, mothers and children and is supported by Charles University.

Czech healthcare professionals help improve the quality of maternity care in Cambodia
Czech specialists are helping to improve the quality of maternity care in Cambodia, with a particular focus on reducing maternal and newborn mortality. They are therefore training local healthcare professionals, supplying essential medical equipment, and helping to establish a system of maternity and neonatal departments capable of caring for women with high-risk pregnancies, premature births and premature newborns. The project was presented today by Antonín Pařízek, Head Physician at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the General University Hospital in Prague.

Czech doctors are helping in Cambodia. They want to reduce maternal mortality during childbirth
Czech doctors and other healthcare professionals are providing assistance in Cambodia. Charles University, together with the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně, has taken patronage over an international project. Its aim is to reduce maternal and child mortality during childbirth, which is at least 20 times higher in Cambodia than in the Czech Republic. One of the main challenges is the shortage of healthcare professionals, many of whom were killed by the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s.

Visit of a Group of Cambodian Specialists from the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh
Cambodian doctors and midwives, including senior management representatives from the National Pediatric Hospital, are taking part in a two-week intensive training programme in Prague under the guidance of Czech specialists. The programme is part of an international development assistance project funded by the Czech Development Agency and implemented by the Vita et Futura Foundation under the title “Czech Perinatal Hands to Cambodia.”

The Czech Perinatal Hands Fly to Cambodia project was announced by the Czech Development Agency in 2021 as a follow-up to a project already completed in 2019. The Vita et Futura Foundation successfully secured the project and was responsible for its planning, preparation and implementation, including the selection of participating experts. During the first half of January, a multidisciplinary team carried out a two-week programme in Cambodia focused on training obstetricians, anaesthesiologists, neonatologists, midwives and paediatric nurses.

In the first half of January 2023, a Czech team consisting of 7 specialists from the Department of Obstetrics at Apolinář, the General University Hospital in Prague, and the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University (FBMI) carried out a 12-day mission to Cambodia as part of a project of the Vita et Futura Foundation, funded by the Czech Development Agency. The main objectives of the Czech Perinatal Hands Fly to Cambodia project are to reduce maternal mortality and mortality among children under five years of age.

Czech Development Agency Supports the “Czech Perinatal Hands Fly to Cambodia” Project
The Czech Republic ranks among the world’s leading countries in the provision of obstetric care. In Cambodia, by contrast, maternal mortality is estimated by the World Bank at 160 deaths per 100,000 live births. Neonatology-focused projects supported by the Czech Development Agency are working to improve this situation. As part of the Czech Perinatology Hands to Cambodia project, a team from the Department of Obstetrics at Apolinář and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and the General University Hospital in Prague, representing the Vita et Futura Foundation, carried out a mission to Cambodia at the end of January. Czech Obstetricians Help Reduce Mortality Among Mothers and Children Under Five in Cambodia
While newborn mortality was around 11% just 30 years ago, today the rate in Cambodian hospitals is fourteen times lower. Czech development cooperation has long focused on healthcare as one of its development priorities. By transferring know-how and providing essential medical equipment, Czech specialists enable Cambodian doctors to deliver high-quality care. In 2022, cooperation between the Czech Development Agency and the Department of Obstetrics at Apolinář continues, with its representatives visiting Cambodia at the beginning of the year.
